Description

Phthalates are a group of synthetic chemicals widely used in various consumer products, including cosmetics and personal care items. These compounds primarily function as plasticizers, enhancing the flexibility, durability, and longevity of products. In skincare formulations, phthalates are often utilized as solvents, fixatives, and fragrance carriers.

The most common phthalates found in cosmetics include diethyl phthalate (DEP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These ingredients help stabilize formulas, prevent products from becoming brittle, and improve the adherence of fragrances to the skin. However, phthalates have come under scrutiny due to potential health concerns, including endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity.
