PHENYL MERCURIC BORATE
Description
Phenyl mercuric borate is a controversial preservative that has been used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. This organomercury compound functions as an effective antimicrobial agent, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms in various formulations. Its primary purpose is to extend the shelf life of products and prevent contamination.
The ingredient consists of a phenyl group bonded to a mercury atom, which is further bonded to a borate group. This unique chemical structure contributes to its potent preservative properties. Phenyl mercuric borate is typically used in very low concentrations, typically less than 0.01%, in products such as eye drops, contact lens solutions, and some topical medications.
However, due to concerns about mercury toxicity and potential health risks associated with long-term exposure, the use of phenyl mercuric borate has been restricted or banned in many countries. Regulatory bodies, including the FDA and European Commission, have implemented strict limitations on its use in cosmetics and personal care products. Alternative preservatives are now preferred in modern formulations to ensure product safety while maintaining efficacy against microbial growth.
