PHENYL MERCURIC ACETATE
Description
Phenyl mercuric acetate is a controversial organomercury compound that was historically used as a preservative in various skincare and cosmetic products. This synthetic ingredient is composed of mercury bonded to a phenyl group and an acetate group, giving it antimicrobial properties. Its primary function was to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi in water-based formulations, thereby extending product shelf life.
Despite its effectiveness as a preservative, phenyl mercuric acetate has been phased out of use in most countries due to significant safety concerns. The compound can be absorbed through the skin, potentially leading to mercury accumulation in the body. Chronic exposure has been linked to serious health issues, including neurological damage, kidney problems, and skin irritation.
Regulatory bodies, including the FDA and EU Commission, have banned or severely restricted the use of phenyl mercuric acetate in cosmetics and personal care products. Alternative preservatives with better safety profiles have largely replaced it in modern formulations. While no longer commonly found in skincare products, it remains important for consumers and professionals to be aware of this ingredient's history and potential risks, especially when considering vintage or internationally sourced products.
