PHENOXYISOPROPANOL
Description
Phenoxyisopropanol is a multifunctional ingredient commonly used in cosmetic and personal care products. This synthetic compound serves primarily as a preservative and antimicrobial agent, helping to extend the shelf life of various formulations by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold. Its chemical structure allows it to be effective against a wide range of microorganisms while maintaining compatibility with other ingredients.
In addition to its preservative properties, phenoxyisopropanol acts as a solvent and can enhance the solubility of other components in a formulation. It is often used in concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 1% in leave-on products and up to 2% in rinse-off products. This ingredient is particularly valuable in water-based formulations, where microbial contamination is a significant concern.
Phenoxyisopropanol is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is considered safe for use in cosmetics when used at appropriate concentrations. It is colorless, has a mild odor, and does not significantly alter the sensory properties of the final product. While effective, it is often used in combination with other preservatives to provide broad-spectrum protection against microbial growth.
