Description

Phenolphthalein is a synthetic organic compound with a unique color-changing property that has found limited applications in skincare formulations. This pH-sensitive molecule appears colorless in acidic solutions but turns pink in alkaline environments, making it useful as a pH indicator in certain cosmetic products.

In skincare, phenolphthalein has been utilized in some specialty formulations as a diagnostic tool to assess skin pH levels. When applied topically, it can provide visual feedback on the skin's acid-base balance, potentially aiding in the selection of appropriate skincare products.

However, phenolphthalein's use in cosmetics is restricted due to safety concerns. Long-term exposure or ingestion has been associated with potential carcinogenic effects, leading to its limited application in the beauty industry. As a result, its inclusion in skincare products is rare and typically confined to professional-grade diagnostic tools or highly specialized formulations.

When present in skincare products, phenolphthalein is used in very low concentrations, typically less than 1%. Its primary function remains as a pH indicator rather than an active ingredient for skin improvement or treatment.
