PEPSIN

Description

Pepsin is a potent proteolytic enzyme derived from the gastric juices of animals, primarily pigs. In skincare and haircare formulations, it serves as an effective exfoliating agent due to its ability to break down proteins. This enzyme works by hydrolyzing peptide bonds, particularly those involving aromatic amino acids such as phenylalanine and tyrosine.

When applied topically, pepsin aids in the removal of dead skin cells and excess keratin, promoting cellular turnover and improving skin texture. It can help address issues like hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. In haircare, pepsin can assist in removing buildup on the scalp and hair shaft, potentially improving hair health and manageability.

Pepsin functions optimally in acidic environments, typically at a pH between 1.5 and 3.5. This characteristic makes it compatible with other acidic skincare ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). However, its activity decreases significantly in neutral or alkaline conditions, which must be considered during formulation.
