PENTYL DIMETHYL PABA

Description

Pentyl Dimethyl PABA, also known as Padimate O, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen formulations and other personal care products. This oil-soluble ingredient functions as a highly effective UVB absorber, providing protection against the sun's harmful rays that can cause sunburn and contribute to skin damage.

Chemically, Pentyl Dimethyl PABA is an ester of 4-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and amyl alcohol. Its molecular structure allows it to absorb UV radiation efficiently, particularly in the UVB range (290-320 nm). This absorption capacity helps prevent UV rays from penetrating the skin, thereby reducing the risk of sunburn and long-term photodamage.

In skincare formulations, Pentyl Dimethyl PABA is typically used at concentrations between 1.4% to 8%, depending on the desired SPF level and other UV filters present in the product. It is often combined with other sunscreen agents to achieve broad-spectrum protection.

While effective, some concerns have been raised about its potential for causing allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. As a result, formulators often consider alternative UV filters or use it in combination with other sunscreen agents to minimize potential adverse effects while maintaining optimal sun protection.
