PENTADECYL ALCOHOL

Description

Pentadecyl alcohol, also known as 1-pentadecanol or n-pentadecanol, is a long-chain fatty alcohol with the molecular formula C15H32O. This saturated primary alcohol is a colorless to white solid at room temperature, with a melting point around 45-46°C. Pentadecyl alcohol occurs naturally in some plant waxes and can also be synthesized for cosmetic and industrial applications.

In skincare formulations, pentadecyl alcohol functions primarily as an emollient and emulsifier. It helps to soften and smooth the skin by forming a protective barrier that reduces moisture loss. This ingredient can improve the texture and spreadability of creams and lotions, contributing to a more pleasant sensory experience for users. Additionally, pentadecyl alcohol may assist in stabilizing emulsions and enhancing the overall consistency of skincare products.

While generally considered safe for topical use, pentadecyl alcohol may cause mild irritation in individuals with sensitive skin. It is often used in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 5% in various cosmetic formulations. As with many fatty alcohols, pentadecyl alcohol can also exhibit mild antimicrobial properties, potentially contributing to product preservation. However, its primary roles in skincare remain focused on its emollient and emulsifying capabilities.
