PENTADECANE
Description
Pentadecane is a straight-chain alkane hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C15H32. This colorless, odorless liquid is derived from petroleum or synthesized in laboratories. In skincare and haircare formulations, pentadecane functions primarily as an emollient and conditioning agent.
As a non-polar compound, pentadecane exhibits excellent spreadability and skin feel, making it a valuable ingredient in various cosmetic products. It forms a protective barrier on the skin and hair, helping to lock in moisture and reduce transepidermal water loss. This property contributes to improved skin hydration and smoother hair texture.
Pentadecane's low molecular weight allows for quick absorption without leaving a greasy residue, making it suitable for a wide range of skin types. In haircare, it can penetrate the hair shaft, providing internal conditioning and improving overall manageability.
The ingredient also acts as a solvent, helping to dissolve and disperse other active ingredients in formulations. Its stability and resistance to oxidation make it an excellent choice for extending the shelf life of cosmetic products. Pentadecane is generally considered safe for topical use and is approved by regulatory bodies for cosmetic applications.
