PEG-5M

Description

PEG-5M, also known as Polyethylene Glycol 5M, is a high molecular weight polymer derived from ethylene oxide. This versatile ingredient functions primarily as a thickening agent and emulsion stabilizer in various skincare and cosmetic formulations. With a molecular weight of approximately 5 million Daltons, PEG-5M forms a viscous, gel-like structure when dissolved in water, contributing to the desired texture and consistency of products.

In skincare applications, PEG-5M acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture to help maintain skin hydration. Its film-forming properties create a protective barrier on the skin's surface, reducing transepidermal water loss. This ingredient also enhances the spreadability of formulations, improving product application and feel.

PEG-5M is compatible with a wide range of other cosmetic ingredients, including both oil and water-soluble components. It is particularly useful in emulsions, helping to prevent separation and extend product shelf life. While generally considered safe for topical use, individuals with sensitive skin should perform a patch test before widespread application, as some may experience mild irritation. PEG-5M is non-comedogenic and suitable for various skin types, making it a valuable ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and other skincare products.
