PEG-200
Description
PEG-200, or Polyethylene Glycol 200, is a versatile synthetic compound widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This water-soluble polymer acts as an effective humectant and emollient, drawing moisture to the skin and helping to maintain hydration. PEG-200 has a low molecular weight, allowing for easy absorption and penetration into the skin's upper layers.
In skincare products, PEG-200 serves multiple functions. It acts as a solvent, helping to dissolve and disperse other ingredients uniformly throughout the formulation. This property makes it valuable in creating stable emulsions and improving the overall texture of products. PEG-200 also functions as a surfactant, reducing surface tension between ingredients and enhancing the spreadability of formulations.
The ingredient's hygroscopic nature contributes to its effectiveness in moisturizing products, helping to prevent water loss from the skin. Additionally, PEG-200 can enhance the delivery of active ingredients, potentially improving their efficacy. While generally considered safe for topical use, some individuals with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation. As with any skincare ingredient, patch testing is recommended before widespread application.
