Paraffinum Liquidum, also known as mineral oil, is a highly refined petroleum derivative widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This colorless, odorless liquid functions primarily as an emollient and occlusive agent, creating a protective barrier on the skin's surface to prevent moisture loss. Its molecular structure is too large to penetrate the skin, making it an effective moisturizer that works by trapping water in the stratum corneum.

Despite its widespread use, Paraffinum Liquidum has been the subject of controversy due to its petroleum origin. However, when properly refined, it is considered safe for cosmetic use by regulatory bodies. It is non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic, making it suitable for sensitive skin types.
