PAPAIN

Description

Papain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the papaya fruit (Carica papaya). This powerful enzyme has gained significant attention in skincare formulations due to its ability to break down proteins and exfoliate the skin gently. Papain works by catalyzing the hydrolysis of peptide bonds, effectively dissolving dead skin cells and promoting cellular turnover.

In skincare products, papain is valued for its exfoliating, brightening, and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and even out skin tone. Papain's gentle nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin types, offering an alternative to harsher chemical exfoliants.

The enzyme is often incorporated into cleansers, masks, and exfoliating treatments. Its optimal pH range for activity is between 5.0 and 7.0, aligning well with the skin's natural pH. Papain's effectiveness can be enhanced when combined with other enzymes or mild acids.

While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience sensitivity to papain. It's important to patch test before use and avoid applying it to broken or irritated skin. Papain's stability in formulations can be improved through proper pH adjustment and the addition of stabilizing agents.
