Panthenol
Description
Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, is a versatile and widely used ingredient in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This alcohol form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is prized for its multifaceted benefits to skin health and appearance. Upon application, panthenol is readily absorbed and converted to pantothenic acid within the skin.
Panthenol acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the skin, which helps improve hydration and maintain skin barrier function. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for soothing irritated or sensitive skin. Research has shown that panthenol can stimulate epithelization, promoting faster wound healing and supporting skin repair processes.
In haircare products, panthenol penetrates the hair shaft, improving moisture retention and elasticity, which can lead to reduced breakage and improved overall hair health. Its molecular structure allows it to form a protective film on both skin and hair, offering a smoothing effect.
Typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 5%, panthenol is compatible with most other skincare ingredients and is suitable for all skin types. Its stability in formulations and minimal risk of irritation make it a valuable component in a wide array of skincare, haircare, and cosmetic products.
