Padimate O

Description

Padimate O, also known as octyl dimethyl PABA or OD-PABA, is a chemical sunscreen agent widely used in sun protection products. This organic compound belongs to the para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) family and functions as an effective UVB absorber. Padimate O has a molecular formula of C17H27NO2 and appears as a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature.

The ingredient works by absorbing harmful UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburn and contribute to skin cancer risk. Padimate O's efficacy in protecting against UVB radiation has made it a popular choice in sunscreens, particularly in water-resistant formulations due to its oil-soluble nature.

While effective, Padimate O has faced scrutiny due to potential photoallergic reactions in some individuals and concerns about its environmental impact on aquatic ecosystems. As a result, its use has declined in favor of newer sunscreen agents in many markets. However, it remains approved by regulatory bodies such as the FDA for use in sunscreen products at concentrations up to 8%.

When formulating with Padimate O, it's often combined with other UV filters to achieve broad-spectrum protection. Its stability and compatibility with various cosmetic ingredients make it versatile in sunscreen formulations.
