P-TERT-BUTYLPHENYLISOBUTANOL
Description
P-tert-butylphenylisobutanol, also known as Lilial or Butylphenyl Methylpropional, is a synthetic fragrance ingredient commonly used in skincare and personal care products. This aromatic aldehyde imparts a fresh, floral scent reminiscent of lily of the valley. Despite its pleasant fragrance profile, it has come under scrutiny in recent years due to potential safety concerns.
The European Union has banned the use of Lilial in cosmetic products since March 2022, citing its classification as a Category 2 reprotoxic substance. This classification suggests potential risks to reproductive health. As a result, many manufacturers globally are reformulating their products to exclude this ingredient.
In skincare formulations, p-tert-butylphenylisobutanol was previously utilized not only for its scent but also for its ability to mask unpleasant odors from other active ingredients. It was particularly common in moisturizers, lotions, and perfumes. While effective as a fragrance component, it has been associated with skin sensitization in some individuals, potentially leading to allergic contact dermatitis.
Given the regulatory changes and safety concerns, alternative fragrance ingredients are now being explored and implemented in cosmetic formulations to replace Lilial.
