Ozokerite

Description

Ozokerite, also known as earth wax or mineral wax, is a naturally occurring, waxy hydrocarbon substance found in sedimentary rock formations. This ingredient is primarily composed of high molecular weight alkanes and cycloalkanes, giving it a unique chemical structure and beneficial properties for skincare and cosmetic formulations.

In skincare products, ozokerite functions as an effective emollient and thickening agent. It forms a protective barrier on the skin, helping to prevent moisture loss and improve overall hydration. This occlusive property makes it particularly useful in lip balms, moisturizers, and protective creams.

Ozokerite's high melting point (between 58°C and 100°C) contributes to its stability in various formulations, enhancing product texture and consistency. It is often used to increase the viscosity of oil-based products and improve their spreadability.

While ozokerite is generally considered safe for topical use, it is important to note that the refined, cosmetic-grade version is preferred over raw ozokerite, which may contain impurities. As with any ingredient, patch testing is recommended for individuals with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to ensure compatibility.
