OZOKERITE

Description

Ozokerite, also known as mineral wax or earth wax, is a naturally occurring, microcrystalline hydrocarbon mineral. This waxy substance is primarily composed of paraffin hydrocarbons and is found in sedimentary rock formations. Ozokerite is extracted through mining processes and subsequently refined for use in various cosmetic and skincare formulations.

In skincare products, ozokerite functions as an effective emollient and thickening agent. Its high melting point and excellent oil-binding properties make it valuable for stabilizing formulations and improving texture. Ozokerite forms a protective barrier on the skin, helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and maintain hydration. This ingredient is particularly useful in lip products, stick formulations, and anhydrous systems.

Ozokerite is compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients and is resistant to oxidation, contributing to the stability and shelf life of products. Its non-comedogenic nature makes it suitable for various skin types. While generally considered safe for topical use, some synthetic alternatives are available for formulators seeking petroleum-free options. When used in appropriate concentrations, ozokerite can enhance product performance without causing irritation or adverse effects on most skin types.
