OYSTER STEROLS
Description
Oyster sterols are a unique class of bioactive compounds derived from the lipid extracts of oyster shells. These natural marine ingredients have gained significant attention in the skincare industry due to their potent moisturizing and barrier-strengthening properties. Structurally similar to cholesterol, a vital component of the skin's lipid barrier, oyster sterols can effectively integrate into the stratum corneum, enhancing its protective function.
These sterols exhibit excellent occlusive and emollient properties, helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and improve skin hydration. Research has shown that oyster sterols can stimulate ceramide production in the skin, further reinforcing the skin barrier and improving overall skin health. Their ability to mimic the skin's natural lipids makes them particularly beneficial for dry, sensitive, or compromised skin conditions.
In formulations, oyster sterols are typically used at concentrations between 0.5% to 3%. They are compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients and can enhance the efficacy of other actives. Oyster sterols are stable in various pH environments and can withstand moderate heat during processing. Their natural origin and skin-mimicking properties make them an valuable ingredient in anti-aging, moisturizing, and barrier repair products.
