Description

Oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone-3, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreens and other personal care products. At a 50% concentration, it serves as a potent ultraviolet (UV) filter, effectively absorbing both UVA and UVB rays. This broad-spectrum protection helps prevent sunburn, premature skin aging, and reduces the risk of skin cancer.

The molecule works by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into heat, which is then dissipated from the skin. Its efficacy in blocking both UVA and UVB rays makes it a valuable ingredient in high-SPF formulations. However, the high concentration of 50% is unusual and exceeds the FDA's recommended maximum of 6% for over-the-counter sunscreen products in the United States.

Despite its effectiveness, oxybenzone has faced scrutiny due to potential environmental impacts, particularly on coral reefs, and concerns about systemic absorption. Some studies suggest it may have estrogenic effects and cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. As a result, alternative UV filters are being explored in newer sunscreen formulations.
