Oxybenzone
Description
Oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone-3, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreens and other personal care products. This synthetic ingredient functions primarily as a broad-spectrum UV filter, effectively absorbing both UVA and UVB rays to protect the skin from sun damage. Its chemical structure allows it to absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then dissipated from the skin.
Oxybenzone is oil-soluble, making it easily incorporated into various cosmetic formulations. It is often combined with other UV filters to enhance overall sun protection efficacy. The ingredient typically appears in concentrations up to 6% in sunscreen products, as regulated by health authorities in many countries.
While effective in sun protection, oxybenzone has faced scrutiny due to potential environmental concerns, particularly its impact on coral reefs. Some studies suggest it may contribute to coral bleaching. Additionally, there are debates about its potential for hormonal disruption and skin irritation in sensitive individuals. As a result, some manufacturers are exploring alternative UV filters.
Despite controversies, oxybenzone remains FDA-approved and is still considered safe and effective for human use by many regulatory bodies when used as directed in sunscreen formulations.
