OXIDIZED POLYPROPYLENE
Description
Oxidized polypropylene is a modified form of polypropylene, a common synthetic polymer, that has undergone controlled oxidation to enhance its properties for various applications, including skincare and cosmetics. This process introduces oxygen-containing functional groups onto the polymer chain, altering its chemical and physical characteristics.
In skincare formulations, oxidized polypropylene serves as a versatile ingredient with multiple benefits. It functions as an effective film-former, creating a protective barrier on the skin's surface that helps lock in moisture and shield against environmental stressors. This barrier property also contributes to its use as a water-resistant agent in sunscreens and long-wearing makeup products.
The oxidation process imparts increased polarity to the polymer, improving its compatibility with other cosmetic ingredients and enhancing its ability to disperse pigments uniformly in color cosmetics. Oxidized polypropylene also acts as a thickening and texturizing agent, providing stability to emulsions and contributing to the smooth, silky feel of many skincare products.
While generally considered safe for topical use, formulators should be mindful of potential sensitivities in individuals with reactive skin types. The concentration of oxidized polypropylene in skincare products typically ranges from 0.5% to 5%, depending on the desired effect and formulation requirements.
