OXALIC ACID
Description
Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound found in various plants, particularly leafy greens like spinach and rhubarb. In skincare, it functions as an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) with potent exfoliating and brightening properties. This dicarboxylic acid has a molecular formula of C2H2O4 and is known for its ability to chelate metals, making it effective in removing stubborn stains and discoloration on the skin.
When used in formulations, oxalic acid works by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing fresher, more radiant skin beneath. Its chemical structure allows it to penetrate the skin effectively, targeting hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Oxalic acid is particularly useful in treating melasma, sun damage, and age spots.
However, its potency requires careful consideration in product formulation. Typical concentrations range from 1% to 3% in leave-on products, with higher concentrations reserved for professional treatments. Due to its strong exfoliating properties, oxalic acid can increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation, necessitating the use of sunscreen. It's contraindicated for individuals with sensitive skin or certain skin conditions, and patch testing is recommended before use.
