Oleths
Description
Oleths are a family of nonionic surfactants derived from ethoxylated oleyl alcohol. These versatile compounds are widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations due to their excellent emulsifying, solubilizing, and conditioning properties. Oleths are characterized by their molecular structure, which consists of an oleyl (unsaturated fatty alcohol) chain attached to a varying number of ethylene oxide units.
The number following "Oleth" in the ingredient name (e.g., Oleth-10, Oleth-20) indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units in the molecule. This number affects the compound's hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB), influencing its solubility and functionality in different formulations. Lower-numbered Oleths are more oil-soluble and suitable for water-in-oil emulsions, while higher-numbered Oleths are more water-soluble and effective in oil-in-water emulsions.
Oleths offer several benefits in skincare products, including improved texture, enhanced spreadability, and increased stability of formulations. They also aid in the delivery of active ingredients and can provide mild cleansing properties. However, formulators should consider potential skin sensitization risks, particularly with lower-numbered Oleths, and adjust usage levels accordingly.
