OLETH-12
Description
Oleth-12 is a versatile synthetic emulsifier and surfactant widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This polyethylene glycol ether of oleyl alcohol is derived from ethoxylated oleyl alcohol, resulting in a compound with both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. Oleth-12's dual nature allows it to effectively bridge the gap between oil and water-based ingredients, promoting stable emulsions and enhancing product texture.
In skincare formulations, Oleth-12 functions as an emollient and solubilizer, helping to create smooth, easily spreadable products. It aids in the even distribution of active ingredients throughout the formulation, potentially improving their efficacy. Oleth-12 also exhibits mild cleansing properties, making it suitable for gentle cleansers and makeup removers.
The ingredient's ability to reduce surface tension contributes to improved product absorption into the skin. However, it's important to note that Oleth-12 may increase the skin's permeability to other ingredients, which can be beneficial for delivering active compounds but may also potentially enhance the absorption of less desirable components.
While generally well-tolerated, individuals with sensitive skin should perform patch tests before widespread use of products containing Oleth-12.
