Octyl Methoxycinnamate

Description

Octyl Methoxycinnamate, also known as Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate or OMC, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen formulations and other personal care products. This oil-soluble ingredient functions primarily as a UV filter, effectively absorbing UVB rays to protect the skin from sun damage. OMC belongs to the cinnamate family of chemicals and is characterized by its clear, colorless liquid form at room temperature.

The compound's molecular structure allows it to absorb UV radiation in the 280-320 nm range, which corresponds to the UVB spectrum. Upon absorption, OMC undergoes a photoisomerization process, converting harmful UV energy into heat. This mechanism helps prevent UV rays from penetrating the skin and causing damage to cellular DNA.

Typically incorporated at concentrations of 2-7.5% in sunscreen formulations, OMC provides broad coverage and synergizes well with other UV filters. Its stability and compatibility with various cosmetic ingredients make it a versatile choice for formulators. However, concerns have been raised about its potential for photoinstability and endocrine disruption, leading to ongoing research and regulatory scrutiny. Despite these concerns, OMC remains one of the most common UV filters in sunscreens worldwide due to its efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
