OCTOXYNOL-13

Description

Octoxynol-13 is a synthetic surfactant and emulsifier commonly used in skincare and haircare formulations. This non-ionic compound belongs to the alkylphenol ethoxylate family and is known for its excellent cleansing and emulsifying properties. With an HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) value of approximately 14.5, Octoxynol-13 effectively reduces surface tension between oil and water, allowing for stable emulsions in various cosmetic products.

In skincare, Octoxynol-13 is utilized in facial cleansers, makeup removers, and acne treatments due to its ability to remove excess oils and impurities from the skin without causing excessive dryness. It also aids in the even distribution of active ingredients throughout formulations. In haircare, this ingredient is found in shampoos and conditioners, where it helps to remove buildup and enhance the penetration of other beneficial components.

While Octoxynol-13 is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics, it may cause mild irritation in individuals with sensitive skin. As with any surfactant, prolonged exposure or high concentrations can potentially disrupt the skin's natural barrier function. Formulators typically use Octoxynol-13 in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 3% in finished products to balance efficacy and skin compatibility.
