OCTOCRYLENE
Description
Octocrylene is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen formulations, functioning as an effective UV filter. This oil-soluble ingredient primarily absorbs UVB rays and short UVA rays, providing broad-spectrum protection against sun damage. Chemically, it's an ester formed from diphenylcyanoacrylate and 2-ethylhexanol, giving it a stable structure that resists degradation from sunlight exposure.
In sunscreen products, octocrylene typically appears at concentrations between 1% and 10%. It's often combined with other UV filters to enhance overall sun protection and improve the photostability of formulations. Octocrylene's ability to absorb UV radiation and convert it into harmless heat makes it valuable in preventing sunburn, premature skin aging, and reducing the risk of skin cancer.
This ingredient also exhibits excellent solubility in cosmetic oils, allowing for smooth, non-greasy product textures. Its compatibility with other sunscreen agents and skincare ingredients makes it versatile in various formulations, from lotions to sprays. While generally considered safe for most skin types, some individuals may experience sensitivity or allergic reactions. Ongoing research continues to evaluate its long-term safety and environmental impact, particularly concerning coral reef ecosystems.
