Octisalate

Description

Octisalate, also known as ethylhexyl salicylate, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen formulations. This oil-soluble ingredient functions primarily as a UVB filter, offering protection against the sun's burning rays. Octisalate belongs to the salicylate family and is characterized by its ability to absorb ultraviolet radiation, converting it into harmless heat.

With a maximum approved concentration of 5% in the United States and 10% in Europe, octisalate is often combined with other UV filters to enhance overall sun protection. Its molecular structure allows for efficient absorption of UVB rays in the 280-320 nm range. Octisalate's lightweight, non-greasy texture contributes to improved sunscreen aesthetics, making products more pleasant to apply.

This ingredient also exhibits mild water-resistant properties, enhancing the durability of sunscreen formulations. Octisalate is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and has a low risk of irritation. However, individuals with salicylate sensitivities should exercise caution. In addition to its UV-filtering capabilities, octisalate can act as a solubilizer for other sunscreen ingredients, particularly avobenzone, helping to stabilize formulations and improve their overall efficacy.
