Octinoxate

Description

Octinoxate, also known as ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate or OMC, is a widely used UVB filter in sunscreens and other personal care products. This organic compound effectively absorbs ultraviolet rays in the UVB spectrum, providing protection against sunburn and DNA damage. Octinoxate is oil-soluble, making it compatible with various cosmetic formulations and allowing for easy incorporation into lotions, creams, and sprays.

The ingredient has a relatively low molecular weight, enabling it to penetrate the stratum corneum and offer enhanced photoprotection. Octinoxate typically appears as a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a faint characteristic odor. Its efficacy as a UV filter is well-established, with a peak absorption at around 311 nm.

While octinoxate is generally considered safe for topical use, some concerns have been raised regarding its potential environmental impact, particularly on coral reefs. As a result, certain regions have implemented restrictions on its use in sunscreen formulations. Additionally, some studies suggest that octinoxate may have weak estrogenic effects, though the clinical significance of this finding remains debated. When formulating with octinoxate, it's crucial to consider its photostability and potential interactions with other UV filters to ensure optimal sun protection.
