OCTENIDINE HCL

Description

Octenidine HCl, or octenidine dihydrochloride, is a potent antimicrobial agent widely used in topical antiseptic formulations. This synthetic compound belongs to the class of bispyridine derivatives and exhibits broad-spectrum activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi and some viruses.

The active ingredient's chemical structure allows it to rapidly adhere to cell membranes, disrupting their integrity and leading to microbial cell death. Octenidine HCl demonstrates a long-lasting effect, with residual antimicrobial activity persisting for several hours after application. It is particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA).

In skincare and medical applications, Octenidine HCl is utilized in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.2%. It is commonly found in wound disinfectants, pre-operative skin preparations, and oral care products. The compound shows excellent skin tolerance and a low risk of allergic reactions or sensitization. Unlike some other antiseptics, Octenidine HCl does not promote bacterial resistance and maintains its efficacy even in the presence of organic matter, such as blood or wound exudates.
