OCTANE
Description
Octane, also known as n-octane or C8H18, is a straight-chain hydrocarbon commonly used in skincare and haircare formulations. This colorless, low-viscosity liquid is derived from petroleum and serves multiple functions in personal care products. Octane primarily acts as an emollient and solvent, enhancing the texture and spreadability of various formulations.
In skincare, octane helps create a smooth, silky feel in lotions, creams, and serums. It aids in the even distribution of active ingredients and can improve product absorption into the skin. Octane's lightweight nature makes it suitable for use in facial oils and moisturizers intended for oily or acne-prone skin types.
In haircare, octane contributes to the development of lightweight styling products and leave-in treatments. It helps reduce frizz and add shine without weighing down the hair. Octane's solvent properties also make it useful in removing excess sebum and product buildup from the scalp and hair shaft.
While octane is generally considered safe for topical use, it may cause irritation in individuals with sensitive skin. As with any cosmetic ingredient, patch testing is recommended before widespread application.
