O-PHENYLPHENOL
Description
O-Phenylphenol, also known as 2-phenylphenol or OPP, is a synthetic organic compound widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations for its potent antimicrobial properties. This white, crystalline solid belongs to the phenol family and is characterized by its ability to effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. In skincare products, o-phenylphenol serves primarily as a preservative, extending shelf life and maintaining product integrity.
The compound's molecular structure consists of two interconnected phenyl rings, which contribute to its stability and efficacy. O-phenylphenol is particularly valued for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity at low concentrations, typically used at levels between 0.1% and 0.3% in formulations. It demonstrates excellent compatibility with other skincare ingredients and remains stable across a wide pH range.
While o-phenylphenol is generally recognized as safe for use in cosmetics by regulatory bodies, it may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. As with any preservative, patch testing is recommended before widespread use. Its effectiveness against common contaminants makes it a valuable component in various skincare products, including cleansers, lotions, and creams, where microbial control is crucial for product safety and longevity.
