O-CYMEN-5-OL

Description

O-Cymen-5-ol, also known as IPBC (Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate), is a synthetic preservative widely used in personal care products and cosmetics. This colorless to pale yellow crystalline solid is prized for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, effectively inhibiting the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds. Its efficacy allows formulators to use it at low concentrations, typically between 0.02% to 0.1%, making it a cost-effective choice for product preservation.

O-Cymen-5-ol is particularly valuable in leave-on skincare formulations, hair care products, and makeup due to its ability to extend shelf life and maintain product integrity. It works synergistically with other preservatives, enhancing overall preservation efficacy. However, its use is restricted in products that may be aerosolized due to potential inhalation risks.

While generally well-tolerated, O-Cymen-5-ol can cause skin sensitization in some individuals, particularly those with iodine allergies. Regulatory bodies, including the EU Cosmetics Regulation, have set specific usage limits to ensure consumer safety. Formulators must carefully consider these restrictions and potential allergenicity when incorporating O-Cymen-5-ol into skincare and cosmetic products.
