O-CRESOL

Description

O-cresol, chemically known as 2-methylphenol, is a potent organic compound with significant applications in skincare formulations. This colorless to yellowish crystalline solid belongs to the cresol family and is derived from coal tar or synthesized from toluene. In skincare, o-cresol functions primarily as a preservative and antimicrobial agent, effectively inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi in cosmetic products.

Its phenolic structure contributes to its antioxidant properties, potentially offering protection against free radical damage in topical applications. O-cresol's ability to penetrate the stratum corneum makes it valuable in certain medicinal formulations for skin conditions. However, its use is strictly regulated due to potential irritation at higher concentrations.

Formulators must carefully balance o-cresol's efficacy with safety considerations, typically using it in concentrations below 0.5% in leave-on products. Its presence in skincare formulations can extend shelf life and maintain product integrity. O-cresol may also act synergistically with other preservatives, allowing for lower overall preservative levels in cosmetic products. Despite its benefits, alternatives are often sought due to increasing consumer demand for natural preservation systems in skincare.
