NEOTAME

Description

Neotame is a high-intensity artificial sweetener that has found applications in skincare formulations due to its unique properties. This dipeptide derivative, chemically known as N-[N-(3,3-dimethylbutyl)-L-α-aspartyl]-L-phenylalanine 1-methyl ester, is approximately 7,000 to 13,000 times sweeter than sucrose. In skincare, neotame serves as a flavoring agent in lip products and oral care formulations, enhancing palatability without adding calories.

The molecule's structure allows it to interact with skin proteins, potentially offering moisturizing benefits. Its low molecular weight facilitates penetration into the upper layers of the epidermis, where it may help to retain moisture. Neotame's stability across a wide pH range makes it compatible with various skincare formulations.

Safety studies have shown neotame to be non-irritating and non-sensitizing when used in topical applications at recommended concentrations. Its exceptional sweetness means only minute quantities are required, minimizing the risk of adverse reactions. However, as with any synthetic ingredient, patch testing is advised for individuals with sensitive skin.

While primarily known for its sweetening properties, ongoing research is exploring neotame's potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in skincare applications.
