MIXED CRESOLS

Description

Mixed cresols are a group of organic compounds consisting of methyl-substituted phenols, primarily comprising ortho-cresol, meta-cresol, and para-cresol. These isomers are often used in combination due to their similar properties and synergistic effects. In skincare formulations, mixed cresols serve as multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and preservative properties.

The antiseptic nature of mixed cresols makes them effective against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts, contributing to product stability and shelf-life extension. Their antioxidant capabilities help protect other ingredients in formulations from oxidative degradation. Mixed cresols also exhibit mild anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially beneficial in addressing skin irritations.

However, the use of mixed cresols in skincare products is subject to regulatory limitations due to potential skin sensitization and irritation at higher concentrations. Typically, they are used in low concentrations, usually below 0.5%, to balance efficacy and safety. When formulating with mixed cresols, it's crucial to consider pH levels, as their effectiveness can vary depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the product. Proper handling and storage are essential, as mixed cresols can be corrosive and may discolor upon exposure to air and light.
