Mexoryl SX
Description
Mexoryl SX, also known as ecamsule or terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid, is a patented photostable UVA filter developed by L'Oréal. This water-soluble compound is highly effective at protecting the skin against long-wave UVA radiation, which is responsible for premature skin aging and DNA damage. Mexoryl SX has a peak absorption at 345 nm, providing broad-spectrum protection when combined with other UV filters.
Unlike some chemical sunscreens, Mexoryl SX does not penetrate deeply into the skin, remaining primarily on the surface where it's most effective. This characteristic contributes to its excellent safety profile and low risk of irritation. The ingredient is photostable, meaning it doesn't break down quickly when exposed to sunlight, ensuring longer-lasting protection.
Mexoryl SX is approved for use in sunscreens in many countries, including the European Union, Australia, and Canada. In the United States, it's exclusively licensed to L'Oréal and its subsidiaries. When formulated in sunscreens, it typically appears at concentrations between 2% and 3%. Its efficacy in preventing UV-induced skin damage has been demonstrated in numerous clinical studies, making it a valuable ingredient in high-performance sun protection products.
