METHYLENEDIOXYBENZOYL ETHYL PABA

Description

Methylenedioxybenzoyl Ethyl PABA is a synthetic organic compound used in sunscreen formulations as a UV filter. This ingredient, also known as Padimate A, belongs to the para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) family of chemicals. It effectively absorbs UVB radiation, helping to protect the skin from sunburn and potential DNA damage.

The molecular structure of Methylenedioxybenzoyl Ethyl PABA consists of a benzene ring with a methylenedioxy group and an ethyl ester of PABA. This configuration allows it to absorb UV light and convert it into harmless heat energy. The ingredient typically appears as a pale yellow to off-white crystalline powder.

In sunscreen formulations, Methylenedioxybenzoyl Ethyl PABA is often used in concentrations ranging from 1% to 8%. It offers good photostability and can enhance the overall SPF of a product when combined with other UV filters. However, like other PABA derivatives, it may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

Regulatory bodies, including the FDA and European Commission, have approved Methylenedioxybenzoyl Ethyl PABA for use in sunscreens. Despite its effectiveness, some formulators are moving away from PABA-based ingredients due to concerns about potential skin sensitization and environmental impact.
