Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile
Description
Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile (MDBGN) is a synthetic preservative formerly used in personal care products and cosmetics. Its primary function is to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, thereby extending product shelf life. MDBGN gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s as an alternative to parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.
Chemically, MDBGN is a halogenated compound with the formula C6H6Br2N2. It is typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.02% to 0.1% in leave-on products and up to 0.3% in rinse-off formulations. MDBGN is effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, particularly gram-positive bacteria.
However, concerns about its safety emerged in the early 2000s. Multiple studies reported cases of allergic contact dermatitis associated with MDBGN exposure, particularly in leave-on products. As a result, the European Union banned its use in leave-on products in 2005 and in all cosmetic products in 2007. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) concluded that no safe concentration of MDBGN could be established for leave-on cosmetic products.
While MDBGN is still permitted in some countries, many manufacturers have phased it out in favor of alternative preservatives with better safety profiles.
