METHYL ALCOHOL
Description
Methyl alcohol, also known as methanol, is a simple alcohol with the chemical formula CH3OH. It is a colorless, volatile, and highly flammable liquid at room temperature. In skincare formulations, methyl alcohol is primarily used as a solvent and denaturant. Its low molecular weight allows it to penetrate the skin easily, making it an effective carrier for other active ingredients.
However, methyl alcohol's use in cosmetics and skincare products is highly restricted due to its potential toxicity. It can cause severe irritation, dryness, and even chemical burns when applied to the skin in high concentrations. Prolonged exposure may lead to systemic absorption, potentially causing serious health issues such as blindness or organ damage.
Despite these risks, methyl alcohol is sometimes used in small amounts in certain cosmetic products, particularly in nail polish removers and hair sprays. Its rapid evaporation rate makes it useful for quick-drying formulations. When used in regulated quantities, it can contribute to product efficacy without posing significant health risks. However, alternative ingredients are often preferred in modern skincare formulations due to safety concerns and the availability of less hazardous options.
