METHOXYCINNAMAL
Description
Methoxycinnamal, also known as octyl methoxycinnamate or ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen formulations and various cosmetic products. This ingredient belongs to the class of chemicals called cinnamates and functions primarily as a UV filter, absorbing UVB radiation to protect the skin from sun damage.
The compound has a molecular formula of C18H26O3 and appears as a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. It is oil-soluble, making it compatible with many cosmetic formulations. Methoxycinnamal offers broad UVB protection with a peak absorption at around 311 nm.
In sunscreen products, methoxycinnamal is often used in concentrations up to 7.5% in the United States and 10% in Europe and Australia. Its efficacy in absorbing UVB rays helps prevent sunburn and reduces the risk of skin cancer and premature aging associated with UV exposure. However, like other chemical sunscreens, it may cause skin irritation in some individuals.
Recent studies have raised concerns about its potential as an endocrine disruptor and its environmental impact on aquatic ecosystems. As a result, some manufacturers are exploring alternative UV filters or developing more eco-friendly formulations.
