Methanol
Description
Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol, is a simple organic compound with the chemical formula CH3OH. It is a colorless, volatile, and highly flammable liquid at room temperature. In skincare and cosmetic formulations, methanol is rarely used due to its toxicity and potential for skin irritation. However, it may occasionally appear as a solvent or denaturant in certain industrial products.
When applied topically, methanol can rapidly penetrate the skin and cause dehydration, leading to dryness, redness, and irritation. Prolonged exposure may result in more severe dermatological issues, including chemical burns and dermatitis. Ingestion or inhalation of methanol can lead to systemic toxicity, affecting the central nervous system and potentially causing blindness or death.
Given its hazardous nature, methanol is strictly regulated in cosmetic and personal care products. Alternative, safer solvents such as ethanol or isopropyl alcohol are typically preferred in skincare formulations. It's crucial for formulators and consumers to be aware of methanol's presence in any product and understand its potential risks. Safety measures, including proper ventilation and protective equipment, are essential when handling methanol in any context.
