MERCURIC OXIDE
Description
Mercuric oxide, a compound of mercury and oxygen, has a long and controversial history in dermatological applications. This inorganic compound exists in two forms: red and yellow, with the red form being more stable. Historically, it was used in various topical preparations for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
In skincare, mercuric oxide was once employed to treat conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis due to its ability to inhibit microbial growth and reduce inflammation. Its mechanism of action involves denaturing proteins in microbial cells, effectively disrupting their cellular functions. Additionally, it was believed to promote wound healing and skin regeneration.
However, the use of mercuric oxide in skincare and medical products has been largely discontinued due to significant safety concerns. Prolonged exposure or absorption through the skin can lead to mercury poisoning, causing severe neurological and renal damage. Modern regulatory bodies, including the FDA, have banned or severely restricted its use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
Today, mercuric oxide is primarily studied in laboratory settings to understand mercury toxicity and develop safer alternatives for skincare applications.
