MALTOSE

Description

Maltose, a disaccharide composed of two glucose units, is a versatile ingredient in skincare formulations. This naturally occurring sugar is derived from the breakdown of starch and is commonly found in various plant sources. In skincare, maltose functions as a humectant and moisturizing agent, attracting and retaining water in the skin's upper layers.

The molecular structure of maltose allows it to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, creating a hydrating effect that helps maintain skin moisture balance. This property makes it particularly beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin types. Maltose also exhibits mild exfoliating properties, gently promoting cell turnover without causing irritation.

In addition to its hydrating capabilities, maltose may contribute to skin barrier function by supporting the natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) in the stratum corneum. It has been shown to have a low comedogenic profile, making it suitable for various skin types, including acne-prone skin.

Maltose is often incorporated into moisturizers, serums, and masks to enhance their hydrating properties. Its stability in formulations and compatibility with other skincare ingredients make it a valuable component in multi-functional products targeting skin hydration and overall health.
