MAGNESIUM SALICYLATE
Description
Magnesium salicylate is a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic properties, commonly used in topical skincare formulations. This compound is formed by the combination of magnesium and salicylic acid, enhancing its bioavailability and efficacy. As a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), it possesses keratolytic properties, effectively exfoliating the skin by dissolving intercellular bonds between corneocytes.
In skincare, magnesium salicylate demonstrates excellent penetration through the stratum corneum, making it particularly effective for treating acne, psoriasis, and other inflammatory skin conditions. Its anti-inflammatory action helps reduce redness and swelling associated with various dermatological issues. Additionally, it exhibits mild antimicrobial properties, contributing to its acne-fighting capabilities.
The magnesium component of this compound may provide added benefits, potentially supporting skin barrier function and aiding in cellular energy production. When formulated at appropriate concentrations, typically between 0.5% to 2%, magnesium salicylate can effectively address multiple skin concerns without causing excessive irritation. However, as with all salicylates, it should be used cautiously in individuals with aspirin sensitivities or those prone to salicylate reactions.
