LAURETH-13
Description
Laureth-13 is a versatile synthetic emulsifier and surfactant commonly used in skincare and haircare formulations. This ethoxylated lauryl alcohol derivative is prized for its ability to stabilize emulsions, enhance product texture, and improve the solubility of other ingredients. With a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value of approximately 14, Laureth-13 effectively bridges the gap between oil and water-based components in cosmetic formulations.
In skincare products, Laureth-13 acts as a gentle cleansing agent and helps create smooth, easily spreadable textures. It assists in the even distribution of active ingredients throughout the formula, potentially enhancing their efficacy. In haircare applications, it functions as a conditioning agent, helping to reduce static and improve manageability.
Laureth-13 is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is considered to have low irritation potential. However, as with all ethoxylated ingredients, there is a small risk of contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen. Reputable manufacturers employ vacuum stripping or other purification methods to minimize this risk. When formulating with Laureth-13, it's essential to consider its concentration and potential interactions with other ingredients to optimize product performance and safety.
