LANOLIN ALCOHOL
Description
Lanolin alcohol, derived from lanolin, a natural wax found in sheep's wool, is a multifaceted ingredient in skincare formulations. This emollient compound consists of a mixture of long-chain aliphatic alcohols, primarily cholesterol, lanosterol, and other sterols. Its molecular structure allows it to form a semi-occlusive barrier on the skin, effectively reducing transepidermal water loss and enhancing moisture retention.
Lanolin alcohol exhibits excellent compatibility with human skin lipids, facilitating easy absorption and integration into the stratum corneum. This property makes it an effective moisturizer and skin conditioner, particularly beneficial for dry, sensitive, or compromised skin. Its emulsifying capabilities enable it to stabilize oil-in-water formulations, improving product texture and spreadability.
In skincare applications, lanolin alcohol is utilized in concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 5%, depending on the desired effect and product type. It is commonly found in creams, lotions, lip balms, and hair care products. While generally well-tolerated, individuals with wool allergies should exercise caution. Lanolin alcohol's ability to enhance the penetration of other active ingredients makes it a valuable component in various cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations.
