LACTULOSE
Description
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide composed of fructose and galactose, primarily known for its use in treating constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. In recent years, it has gained attention in the skincare industry for its potential benefits in topical applications. Lactulose functions as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria on the skin's surface and contributing to a healthy microbiome.
When applied topically, lactulose can enhance skin hydration by acting as a humectant, drawing moisture from the environment into the skin. This property helps improve skin barrier function and reduce transepidermal water loss. Additionally, lactulose may have mild exfoliating effects, gently removing dead skin cells and promoting cellular turnover.
Research suggests that lactulose possesses anti-inflammatory properties, potentially benefiting conditions such as acne and eczema. Its ability to modulate the skin microbiome may help balance sebum production and reduce the proliferation of acne-causing bacteria. Furthermore, lactulose has shown promise in supporting collagen synthesis, which could contribute to improved skin elasticity and reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
