LACTOSE
Description
Lactose, a disaccharide sugar commonly found in milk and dairy products, has gained attention in skincare formulations for its multifaceted benefits. This natural compound consists of glucose and galactose molecules bonded together, offering unique properties that contribute to skin health and product efficacy.
In skincare, lactose functions as a humectant, drawing moisture to the skin's surface and helping to maintain hydration levels. Its molecular structure allows it to penetrate the stratum corneum, enhancing skin barrier function and reducing transepidermal water loss. Additionally, lactose exhibits mild exfoliating properties, gently removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover.
Lactose also serves as a prebiotic, supporting the growth of beneficial skin microbiota. This action helps maintain a balanced skin microbiome, potentially improving skin health and resilience against environmental stressors. Furthermore, lactose can act as a stabilizing agent in formulations, enhancing the shelf life and texture of skincare products.
While generally well-tolerated, individuals with lactose intolerance or milk allergies should exercise caution when using lactose-containing skincare products. As with any new ingredient, patch testing is recommended to ensure compatibility with individual skin types.
